Buyer / Raw Materials

Job Summary

The Buyer is responsible for successfully executing the strategic direction for Raw Material in support of current and growth initiatives set by the business. S/he will drive the sourcing direction, vendor matrix, quality and customer management initiatives while collaborating with sales, operations and QA to source quality materials to meet financial and service expectations.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Responsible for the sourcing, procurement and supplier management of all Raw Materials. Actively lead and participate in purchasing initiatives. Manage strategic partnerships between company and vendors. Responsible for the total quality, continuous improvement, costs, service and value performance of the vendors supplying our manufacturing facilities.
  • Achieves the timely ordering and releasing of items needed for plant production while managing appropriate inventory levels of all Raw, Chemicals, and some In-Direct Materials
  • Responsible for sourcing 80% Direct and 20% Indirect spend; totaling ~$5 mm
  • Produces reports relative to tracking purchasing performance
  • Develop and maintain ongoing market insight and knowledge on current on all changes associated with commodities, vendors/suppliers, market conditions, economic factors, security issues and pricing domestically and internationally.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, latest estimate, and assure cost performance goals are met.
  • Actively engage and support cross-functional efforts with Operations, Quality Assurance, Finance, R&D, Marketing and Sales. Included but not limited to new product development, product improvements, reformulations, changes in process.
  • Negotiate major purchases, develop blanket or master agreements with suppliers, and engage in all aspects of contract management.
  • Maintain the organizations purchasing policies, procedures, standards, and strategies to ensure process transparency, fairness, impartiality, and confidentiality.
  • Develop and manage the proposal, bidding, and negotiation process while adhering to applicable legal standards and codes of ethical conduct
  • Evaluate overall supplier health (supplier risk assessment).
  • Review and assess total supply chain risk and identify opportunities to minimize and eliminate risk.
  • Confer with management and staff coordinating purchasing activities. Develop and measure key performance indicators to determine and improve the effectiveness of the purchasing function.
  • Maintain current technical skills and apply new knowledge to management tasks for the improvement of purchasing activities.
  • Analyze purchasing related information and evaluate the results to choose the best resolution and alternatives to supply challenges
  • Develop, negotiate and implement procurement strategies and contingency plans.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the supply chain processes through detailed cost bar analysis for raw materials, packaging, direct labor, indirect labor, manufacturing, logistics, and distribution.
  • Develop category strategies and execute sourcing events to assure supply and drive margin improvement processes that provide organic and systemic growth while delivering supply chain efficiencies for the Brands.
  • Develop, negotiate and execute contractual agreements with suppliers and ensure legal documents are in place for all managed items.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Agri-business, ingredient focus, or related discipline.
  • 5 years of experience in a sourcing or procurement management role with direct responsibility for supplier, management and pricing/cost decisions required.
  • Experience and strong ability to align and collaborate with cross-functional peers and teams.
  • Working knowledge and experience with strategic sourcing processes.
  • Financial/material costing experience.
  • Change management/continuous improvement background.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
  • Ability to lead and drive change.
  • Strong project management – planning and executing
  • Procurement MRP / Purchasing System implementation: Desired SAP
  • Position requires strong critical thinking and a high level of analytical and creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and critical issues simultaneously.
  • Advanced communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, with an emphasis on interpersonal and consensus building capabilities.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to deal with change, and demonstrate cross-functional team skills to provide required support as well as proficiency for collaboration, attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
